Come on in and visit with Fish while he tells you about his Groundhogs day. Grab a cup of coffee but keep in mind that there is no truth to Fish's stories.
Many years ago when I was a wee lad I wanted to get a groundhog to determine the weather. Cause we were just about out of wood for the fire place and hay for the horses and cows.
So I thought I would be smart and catch four of them, one for each side of the house. That way at least two of them would not see his shadow.
Let me ask you did you ever try to catch a ground hog alive? It is not an easy task. But I was determined.
On February the second I started out real early like about 2:00 in the morning. It didn't take me long to find a nice groundhog hole, laying down next to it. I fell fast asleep.
The next thing I knew the sun was shining real bright. But the groundhogs did not want to be caught that day. As I slept the groundhog's had sliped out and tied me all up with corn silk. So much corn silk I have never seen.
Well needless to say it took me a long time to get loose. And when I finally got loose and got home, about 5:00 that evening every one was so upset. It seems that after the groundhogs had tied me up they went back to sleep and never showed that day at all.
Now if you check back in the records you will find some, where there is no record of a groundhog showing up that day. That was one of those days
The Groundhog was considered an honorable ancestor by the Delaware Indians.
